Google Earth Competitors
What kind of competition does Google Earth have? There is really no other software program that exists right now which can do what Google Earth can do exactly how it does it and for free. There are similar programs and there are pay programs that do this but not free software programs so Google really has a great market on this with Google Earth.
However, there is a bit of competition and there have been smaller companies that attempt to achieve what Google Earth has.
What kind of competition are we talking about here? Some samples of similar software include:
- TerraExplorer
- Local.live.com from MSN
TerraExplorer has 3D flythrough, six degrees of movement and similar features of Google Earth. It doesn’t have all the same features as EarthViewer, however and many do not believe it is as easy to use as the Google program.
One thing people like about Local.Live.com is that it does not give you the sateliite images that Google Earth does. You do not get realistic photos of the location – only a drawn-out map. Perhaps this will serve your purpose if you only need directions but it doesn’t have all the other great uses that Google Earth does. You can’t “fly” to the Sphinx or Pyramids or see 3D models of the Grand Canyon. For flat maps, it works well and it doesn’t require the user to download anything.
